Don Haskins Convention Center, El Paso, Texas - In a battle of former champions, Abner Mares (24-0, 13KOs) won a twelve round unanimous decision over Eric Morel (46-3, 23KOs) to capture the vacant WBC super bantamweight title. Their fight took place at a catch-weight of 120-pounds. The scores were 120-107, and 119-109 twice.

Morel started will in the first round with his jab and defensive movements. In the second, Mares turned up the heat and appeared to stun Morel with a series of shots. Morel was having issues early on with Mares' speed and high-pace punching.

Morel was getting word down by the fourth round, with Mares working over the head and especially the body. The left eye of Morel was swelling up in the fifth round. In the next couple of rounds, Morel tried hard but he couldn't do enough to win the rounds because Mares was more active, throwing harder punches and blocking many of Morel's shots.
